With 24 furnished single rooms in each of the two apartment blocks, the six-bedroom Ruahine and Tararua apartments are suitable for mature and returning students. Each containing four 6-bedroom units, the apartment blocks are set among a community of accommodation halls, and are a 5-minute walk to the centre of the Massey campus and near the bus stop to the city.

Rooms and furniture

All bedrooms in Ruahine and Tararua apartments are fully-furnished single private rooms. Each has a window that can be opened, and a secure lockable door.

Each room includes:

  • a single bed and mattress
  • wardrobe
  • drawers
  • desk, lamp and chair
  • shelves, mirror and rubbish bin
  • carpet and curtains
  • heater.

Your apartment kitchen contains basic cooking and eating equipment including:

  • plates and cutlery
  • pots and pans
  • cooking utensils such as wooden spoons, spatulas.

Items you should bring

Along with clothing and personal items, you should also bring:

  • toiletries and toiletry bag
  • your own bedding and towel (or you can buy a pack containing these items on arrival)
  • coat hangers
  • laundry detergent
  • 3M hooks/tape or white tac, if you wish to hang anything on your wall (no tape, nails, screws or blu tac allowed).

You may also choose to bring a small fridge, no larger than 45L, which must be put on a waterproof mat.

Bathrooms

Ruahine and Tararua six-bedroom apartments each have a shared gender neutral bathroom with shower and basin, plus a separate toilet. Bedrooms also have their own basin.

Self-catering

Ruahine and Tararua apartments are self-catered. Students can store food and prepare their meals in the shared apartment kitchen, or communal kitchenette.

There are a range of supermarkets in Palmerston North, on bus routes, for students to purchase food from.

Communal spaces and shared facilities

The six-bedroom apartments each have a lounge with couches, a coffee table and a TV. Apartment kitchens have a fridge/freezer, stove and oven, sink, microwave, toaster and jug .

Ruahine and Tararua apartment residents can also use nearby Monro Commons, a large modern shared space with couches, tables and chairs, a TV, a deck with views across Palmerston North, a kitchenette and toilets.

The nearby Stables laundry, which has washing machines, dryers and outdoor rotary clotheslines, is accessible 24/7. The laundry is free of charge to use — students supply their own detergent. A computer lab is available within Ruahine Hall.

All these common facilities are shared with residents from other Monro Hill halls.

Alcohol

Students are allowed to store some forms of alcohol in this hall and drink it in moderation within designated areas on set days and times.

The pricing for Ruahine and Tararua apartments is as follows.

Room rates include:

  • wifi
  • laundry facilities
  • electricity (although residents who use more than a reasonable amount of electricity will be charged extra).

All students can pay by semester or full year. Domestic students are also able to pay by direct debit on a weekly basis.

Deposit

To secure your accommodation, you will need to pay a deposit by the date stated in your letter of offer. The deposit is $670 for a full year or $630 for one semester and includes an administration fee, a refundable bond and an activity fee.

If you need to cancel, there is a cut off date in order to secure a refund of the bond and activity fee – the administration fee is non-refundable.
