This course fosters a critical examination of research and practice in early childhood education associated with the learning, development and care of infants and toddlers from conception to age two, with consideration of the critical role of early childhood teachers.

  • 1 Critique approaches to infant and toddler provision by articulating a philosophy of infant and toddler pedagogy and practice with consideration of the early childhood curriculum.
  • 2 Critically evaluate issues for infants and toddlers including attachment, separation and transition, attentive caregiving, nutrition, environmental influences and optimal early experiences in relation to learning and developmental outcomes.
  • 3 Identify and discuss key milestones, experiences and socio-cultural factors that influence the learning and development of an infant/toddler.
  • 4 Articulate the importance of an inclusive, bicultural and partnership-oriented approach to infant and toddler provision.
