  • 1 Evaluate current understanding of the mechanisms controlling mammogenesis, lactogenesis and galactopoiesis.
  • 2 Distinguish differences in nutrient metabolism of lactating animals, describe in detail the synthesis of milk components, and discuss mechanisms controlling them.
  • 3 Compare and contrast the roles of prolactin and growth hormone in different species.
  • 4 Debate the role of animal nutrition, physiological stage of development, environmental factors, and epigenetic effects on milk production.
  • 5 Prioritise milk components and assess the role they play in dairy food production, functionality and human health.
  • 6 Determine circumstances which may lead to altered milk composition and debate the mechanisms involved and the potential impact.
  • 7 Determine the structure and functions of mammary epithelial cells and the effects of milking frequency, animal nutrition and physiological stage of development or lactation.
  • 8 Demonstrate skills in reading and evaluating scientific literature, in planning and writing a logical well-supported argument, and in presentation, and apply these skills in effective communication.
