Staff wellbeing

As an employee, your wellbeing is a priority at Massey. We want you and your whānau to be able to flourish as part of the university community.

Note: Wellbeing in COVID-19

There are different ways the university can support you during COVID-19, with work and non-work related wellbeing.

Along with the usual support, remind yourselves and your teams of the below.

  • You are not ''working from home'', you are ''at your home, during a crisis, trying to work''.
  • Your personal physical, mental, spiritual, and whānau health are more important than anything else.
  • You should not try to compensate for lost productivity by working longer hours.
  • You will be kind to yourself and not judge how you are coping based on how you see others coping.
  • You will be kind to others and not judge how they are coping based on how you are coping.
  • Your team's success will not be judged the same way it was when things were normal.

Employee Assistance Programme

The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a free, external, and confidential counselling service. It is available to all fixed term and permanent staff who are of 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) or greater and have an employment agreement of 12 months or more.

EAP can be used for work or non-work related issues. We urge you to use this service, and recommend it to your colleagues.

Equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging at Massey

Massey aims to create an environment where all staff and students are welcome and included. We run a range of initiatives to support everyone to bring their whole selves at Massey:

  • Pay and Employment Equity Implementation Group – this comprises HR staff including our Director of Employment Relations, and Tertiary Education Union representation. The committee focuses on identifying issues and opportunities relating to diversity and inclusion to create equitable opportunities for all. A major focus of the committee is equitable pay for all our staff.
  • The Gender Pay gap – in 2009, Massey University was the first NZ university to undertake a Pay and Employment Equity review and has published regular reviews since then.
  • Women@Massey – a group for all staff who identify as women to join, where they can connect, share, and learn.
  • Wellbeing and Inclusion Speaker Series – a monthly speaker session where experts come and speak about different areas of interest, for example, on neurodiversity, racism, gender equity, and parenting and working, accessibility and Rainbow and Takatāpui inclusion.
  • Staff training – several modules supporting staff wellbeing and which focus on our ethical values are available to all staff. Our aim is to provide a supportive work environment in which all students and staff can feel safe, respected, dignified and able to flourish in work, learning and research.
  • Diversity Works – we partner with Diversity Works to support us and run staff trainings. These include a module on Unconscious Bias which focuses on the value of supporting diversity and inclusion. This module forms part of the academic promotion process and is compulsory for all staff on selection committees.
  • Curated Collections – eight collections of resources (articles, papers, workshops, online modules) are available on the Massey Intranet for all staff to access. Topics covered include working together, communication, organisational leadership, people management and delivering results.
  • Te Ohu Oranga – our well-being community that all staff can join to connect, share, and learn together.
  • Diversity and Inclusion Advisor – this position was created in 2021 to start and strengthen initiatives to increase diversity and inclusiveness for staff and students, particularly those of minority sexualities, genders, and diverse sex characteristics.

Rainbow Tick

Massey was accredited in 2017 and is proud of all the work we do to support Rainbow and Takatāpui communities. This includes creating more inclusive recruitment practices and facilities on campus, running advocacy and support groups, offering education workshops to our staff and students, partnering with organisations to help make us more inclusive, and celebrating events such as Pride and Pink Shirt Day.
