Former Massey University Faculty of Business dean and Professor Emeritus Sir Ngatata Love died last week at the age of 81.

Sir Ngatata was, from 1985-95, the second dean of the faculty, now known as the College of Business or Massey Business School.

He joined the University in 1973, as senior lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management. The following year he moved to a role in the newly-established Department of Business Studies, later becoming the director of the Management Education and Development Centre within the department.

College Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Kelly says Sir Ngatata is remembered as a powerful figure who worked hard to reduce disparities in Māori education, health and employment. “He was instrumental in the development of the Massey Business School, bringing a Māori perspective to business development that continues to have an impact on the teaching programmes and staff in the school to this day,” Professor Kelly says.

Sir Ngatata was a member of the Massey University Council from 2005-11.

In 2001, he was made a companion of the Queen's Service Order for his contribution to Massey University and Te Puni Kokiri. He was made a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori in the 2009 New Year’s Honours list.
