The Wellington campus’ bike share scheme has been extended, following an evaluation of the six-month trial period.

The scheme came about last year, following an idea from Massey University master's student Sherry Shi. Ms Shi thought it would be great if students and staff at the University could borrow a bike to zip around the city for appointments or errands.

With the help of a team from Campus CoLab and funding through Think Differently, the idea came to fruition in September.

The evaluation of the service found the scheme saves users 25 minutes on travel time and $8.75 in travel costs.

The hire time for the bikes, which are available free of charge to students and staff, has been extended to two-hours and the booking process has evolved into a membership-style system based out of Massey University Gym.

More details are available online: massey.ac.nz/bikeshare. Two bikes, including one electric assist, are available.
