Once you apply, the University and your named referees are contacted to provide relevant information. You must allow both the Scholarships Office and your referees time to complete these actions before the closing date. The University Scholarships Office cannot guarantee an immediate response to these requests.
Bruce Cronin was the first manager of Bay Trust serving from 1996 to 2014.
This scholarship has been established to recognise his service to the people of the Bay of Plenty.
To be eligible to apply for a Bruce Cronin Bay Trust Scholarship applicants must have links to the Bay Trust geographical area.
The Bay Trust geographical area is shown on the Bay Trust website http://www.baytrust.org.nz/ and applicants will be eligible if they were born in, or attended school in, or have whakapapa back to the area.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from a New Zealand university.
One scholarship will be awarded each year.
The scholarship will carry an award of $5,000 and is to support postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level at a New Zealand university in one of the following areas of research:
The selection committee reserves the right to determine if the applicant’s area of research falls into one of these categories.
The dissertation or thesis should have a demonstrable benefit to the wider Bay of Plenty region.
Candidates should complete an application form using the Universities NZ on-line scholarship application web-site:
The closing date by which applications must be complete and submitted through the website is 16 March for tenure in the same year.
The on-line application form will request and applicants must provide:
1.evidence of their qualifying association with the Bay of Plenty.
2.an up to date curriculum vitae.
3.a description of the research (to a maximum of 1,000 words) which identifies the benefits to the Bay of Plenty region.
The on-line application will prompt candidates to request a copy of their academic transcript from their New Zealand university.
In the on-line application candidates are asked to nominate two people to provide references in support of their application:
-one referee should be able to comment on the candidates academic ability and capacity.
-the other referee should be able to comment on the candidate’s association with the Bay of Plenty.
A selection committee will be nominated and convened by Universities NZ.
Membership of this committee will include a Trustee of Bay Trust.
Universities NZ will forward all eligible and complete applications to the selection committee.
The selection criteria used by the committee will include the relevance of the proposed research to the Bay of Plenty area.
The committee will advise Universities NZ of its decisions; Universities NZ will advise each candidate of the result of his/her application.
Reports from both the scholar and his/her supervisor or principal lecturer must be provided. These should report on scholar’s progress and achievements in his/her study/research.
The required timing of these reports will be advised to the scholar by Universities NZ and it is the scholar’s responsibility to ensure that the reports are submitted to Universities NZ on time.
All reports will be forwarded to the Trustees of Bay Trust and to the selection committee.
A copy of the final dissertation or thesis must be submitted to Universities NZ for Bay Trust.
Finance and Administration
The funds for the scholarships are made available by Bay Trust.
The scholarship programme is administered by Universities NZ.
Universities NZ is responsible for managing the application process, assisting the selection committee in the selection process, advising candidates of the results and arranging payment of the award funds to scholars.
Power to Vary
Bay Trust, or the selection committee with the approval of the Trustees, may from time to time vary these regulations provided that such changes are consistent with the general purposes of the scholarship.
Application cannot be accepted before 16/12/2017.
