The New Zeal and ESRI Users Group (NZEUG) is pleased to announce an inaugural Postgraduate GIS (Geographic Information Systems and Science) Scholarship of $5000. The scholarship will be awarded annually to encourage postgraduate research in GIS within New Zealand and to promote greater professionalism within the GIS industry.
The scholarship is open to NZ citizens or residents studying towards a Masters or Honours research thesis in GIS in New Zealand in the following academic year. The scholarship will be awarded to a high quality postgraduate student undertaking a project of benefit to the New Zealand GIS industry.
Applicants will need to provide a research proposal, including a statement of how this research will benefit the NZ geospatial sector, a full academic record, and a letter of support from his/her Programme Director or equivalent. Research proposals should be no more than 5 pages including references, tables and figures.
The successful applicant is expected to present a paper at the New Zealand ESRI Annual User Conference with the user group supporting the successful applicant with some of the cost of attending the conference.
Award winners have to be a member of the NZEUG. Student membership is free.
$3000 will be awarded on receipt of enrolment confirmation by your Programme Director.
$2000 will be awarded on confirmation of your completed thesis.
Where, in the opinion of the judges, the required standards are not met for the award, NZEUG will not make that award in any particular year.

Announcement date: on or before 21 August. The winner will be announced on the NZEUG website and contacted in writing.
Conditions of the scholarship
The applicant must notify the NZEUG committee of the applicant’s intention to cease active involvement in the approved programme of study.
No payments will be made to the applicant if the applicant is not actively involved in the approved programme of study.
The applicant will reimburse NZEUG if, for whatever reason, they cease to be involved in, or withdraw from, the approved programme of study.
The NZEUG Committee may, at its discretion, relax or modify the application of any of these regulations under special circumstances, to avoid hardship to any applicant.

NZEUG serves the GIS community within the ESRI software environment. The NZEUG is a non-profit organisation that:
-Promotes the beneficial use of Geographic Information Systems and Science and associated information technologies,
-Engages in or contracts with the government or commercial organisations for the provision, creation, or development of data, software, services, devices, documentation, publications or other activities which it judges useful to its members, and
-Engages in advocacy with other organisations to achieve outcomes in relation to government policies and practices, standards, the advancement of industry knowledge and the protection and enhancement of industry good practice.
