Purpose The purpose of the Massey University Elite Sports World Travel Award (the Award) is to support tertiary study while pursuing excellence in sport, and provide financial assistance to elite Massey athletes representing New Zealand at pinnacle annual, biannual or quadannual international sporting events.
Value A minimum of $1,000 and maximum of $3,000 will be awarded to successful applicants in contribution to the financial expenses associated with the event. The Committee reserves the right to grant more funding in exceptional circumstances.
Eligibility In order to be eligible for this award, applicants must be New Zealand Citizens, and meet all of the following criteria • Be in ‘good’ or better academic standing • Any funding granted will be conditional on the applicant successfully passing all courses in the most recent semester • Enrolled (internally or by distance) in at least 30 credits in one academic year at Massey University at the time of application • Not in receipt of additional funding from another tertiary institution • Have gained formal selection for New Zealand representation at a pinnacle international sporting event such as Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World University Games, and World Championships* • Have not received this award more than once previously • Have not received the Travel and Accommodation Assistance Fund in the same calendar year • Submit a complete and accurate application (available online and submitted via email) • Meet all Conditions of the Award
The Selection Committee reserves the right to consider factors outside the usual selection criteria under exceptional circumstances.
The meeting of all criteria does not guarantee an applicant the Award.
Selection Process Closing Dates Funds are awarded twice annually with applications considered at six-month intervals. Applications open 15 September and close 15 December for events beginning between 15 December and 31 May. Applications open 1 March and close 1 June for events beginning between 1 June and 15 December. Applications must be submitted within the specified timeframe and in advance of the event in order to be considered. Consideration Period Applications are considered and applicants made aware of the outcome within six weeks of the closing date. Where an event falls within the consideration period the applicant must take responsibility for meeting all conditions of the award should they be successful. Selection Committee Applicants will be considered and the Award granted only by a decision of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will consist of representative from Registrar Operations, academic staff member/s, High Performance Coordinator representative, a member of the University Scholarships Committee or nominee and a Scholarships Team representative by way of providing secretarial support during the committee meeting. The Committee will consider the number of applicants, available funds and the achievements of the applicant. Each round is considered in isolation; the outcome of previous rounds are only relevant when the applicant in question was a successful previous recipient. Payment Payment of the Award is made post-event into the recipient’s bank account only after the Selection Committee is satisfied that all conditions of the Award have been met and/or fulfilled.
*Where an application must be submitted before formal selection has been made an Applicant may be granted the Award in a provisional sense pending selection and the completion of all other requirements.
Conditions of the Award Payment of the Award to successful applicants is subject to the following conditions. Failure to meet or fulfil these conditions may result in non-payment. • Recipients must attend the event for which they have been granted the Award. • Award recipients are obliged to reflect Massey in a positive light by both upholding their sport code of conduct (including anti-doping policy), and endorse Massey University as a sportfriendly institution through involvement in promotion which may include but is not limited to social media, articles, photos and interviews. Specific arrangements will be determined on a case-by-case basis between the recipient and a High-Performance Coordinator. • Recipients must complete the Post-Event Report and Scholarship Contract, which will be sent with the letter of offer. Recipients must also provide proof of bank account details. These documents must be received within 30 days of having completed competition.
