The aim of this scholarship is to provide financial support for Waikato-Tainui registered tribal members engaging in doctoral studies at a New Zealand tertiary institution.

a.Applicants must be registered Waikato-Tainui tribal members who are resident and studying in New Zealand.

b.Applications can be made at any time during the year.

c.Applicants must be enrolled in either full-time or part-time study in a doctoral programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution.

d.The tenure of the award shall be for one year only. The maximum number of doctoral scholarships awarded to any one applicant is three full-time or six part-time. Applicants in consecutive years are to be made as per requirements set out in (g).

e.Applications must state their commitment to engaging with and participating in Marae, Hapuu and Iwi community initiatives and this statement must be verified by a Marae kaumaatua. Verification from the nominated Marae will also sought by Waikato-Tainui before the application is processed.

f.Termination of or withdrawal from the programme of study for which the scholarship has been awarded, shall constitute immediate termination of the scholarship. Should the scholar subsequently re-apply, they will only be eligible for the outstanding amount of the original scholarship awarded.

g.Information requirements in each year of study are:
1st year - completed application form and detailed research proposal;
2nd year - progress report signed off by supervisor;
3rd year - progress report signed off by supervisor and at completion, final report.

h.Scholarships will be paid in one instalment to a nominated bank account on or around the 20th of the month following the month they have been approved.

i.Successful applicants are expected to submit their final thesis (fully bound) to Waikato-Tainui upon graduating with their degree. The thesis will be housed in the Endowed College library. Scholars will have the opportunity to present their thesis to the Patron of the college at a date and time which will be advised.

j.All outputs and publications shall appropriately acknowledge the assistance of Waitako-Tainui. Waikato-Tainui reserves the right to use successful applicant’s names and other details for publicity and promotion purposes.

k.Waikato-Tainui has the sole discretion to accept or decline an application that does not meet the grant criteria.

Decisions are FINAL and NO Correspondence will be entered into.
