Sciences research at Massey

Massey University demands excellence in our research and bring together experts from several disciplines to focus on four fields to further knowledge and make a difference in New Zealand and the world. Those fields are:

  • Agriculture, Veterinary and Life Sciences
  • Land, Water and the Environment
  • Industrial Innovation through Engineering and Technology
  • Natural and Fundamental Sciences

Agriculture and environment research

Our research in this area focuses on taking our primary industries into a sustainable future, and ensuring the conservation of our indigenous biodiversity and landscapes.

Engineering and advanced technology research

Areas of research expertise at Massey include areas such as artificial intelligence, smart environments, micro-electronics, health informatics, biotechnology, energy research and the built environment.

Fundamental sciences research

We are strongly linked into New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence and have extensive international collaborations. We have a strong track record of applied research leading to commercialisation. This group is based on the Manawatū campus.

Natural and Mathematical Sciences

Our areas of specialisation cross mathematical and natural sciences disciplines. We disseminate and preserve scientific knowledge of the highest quality in our areas of specialisation, producing relevant, globally-influential research. This group is based on Massey's Auckland (Albany) campus.

Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences

We conduct research across a large number of species in a wide range of disciplines. As the first and only university in New Zealand to offer veterinary science, we have a long history of expertise in veterinary-related research.

New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study

The institute exists to encourage and support academic scholarship at the highest level - the original, often speculative, critical thinking that produces major advances in knowledge.
