The demand for people with environment management skills is growing in New Zealand and overseas. The degree reflects the growing awareness for the need to protect the environment and use resources of land, water, soil, plants and animals in a balanced and sustainable way. New Zealand has a diversity of landscape types ranging from undisturbed areas and rural countryside through to regional parks and urban landscapes. How we manage our natural environment will affect the quality of life of New Zealanders now and into the future. The Environment Management degree will give you the broad training and skills to carry out this challenging work.
The BEnvMgmt is a three-year degree providing a mix of compulsory and optional papers in a wide range of subjects while ensuring opportunity for study in specialist areas. The degree structure is outlined below. BEnvMgmt graduates can proceed to a higher postgraduate degree like the one-year postgraduate Honours degree (BEnvMgmt(Hons)) or Postgraduate Diploma (PGDipEnvMgmt) or the Masters degree programme. At the postgraduate level the class is usually comprised of graduates from a number of disciplines from overseas and other New Zealand universities. Both our undergraduates and postgraduates are well placed throughout the resource or environment management sectors.
Introduction
In New Zealand, legislation and government policy have focused attention on the sustainable use of our natural resources. Successful implementation of the policy will require technically competent graduates with an understanding of land use activities, a good understanding of the details of the legislation, and an awareness of the issues and conflicts involving environment management in New Zealand and overseas.
The degree is deliberately broad-based and allows a student to gain perspectives in applied science, policy, regulation, and environmental economics; as well as developing a competence in the science and management of resources. It is structured to include teaching resources from other Colleges and provides an opportunity to integrate disciplines.
Career opportunities
There are a number of career paths open to individuals wanting to turn their interest in the environment into a career. Potential employers both in New Zealand and overseas include Central Government, Regional, District and City Councils, and private sector consultants and entrepreneurs. Graduates with environment management skills are employed in the following areas: Environmental Planning and Policy, Coastal Management, Landscape Management, Soil and Water, Agriculture and Forestry, Geographic Information Systems, Tourism and Recreation, Development, National Parks, Renewable Energy, Biodiversity Management and others.
Student profile
Natasha Hoogeveen - Subject Reader
"After my degree I went on to do the Honour’s programme. After finishing my studies I was interviewed by two organizations and, amazingly, they both offered me a job! At the interviews they were impressed with the practical nature of my studies and the technical skills I had developed.
The base programme was sound and provided a solid foundation to develop from. After doing the core papers, I was really impressed with the scope of elective papers that suited my particular interest areas. My advice to people thinking of studying in the environment management area is to speak with staff at Massey, they were really helpful when it came to choosing papers that suited my interest areas. Choose papers that interests you - there are a huge opportunities open to you. It’s your call, you just have to go for it!
For me, going on to my Honours degree afterwards was awesome!"
