Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics

This course applies fluid mechanics to systems which might be encountered in engineering practice. Topics include fluid properties, hydrostatics, laminar and turbulent flow, energy and continuity equations in one dimension. The course also covers basic concepts of thermodynamics, including perfect gas properties and zero’th, first and second laws.

  • 1 Apply the three laws of thermodynamics to basic engineering problems.
  • 2 Perform calculations to analyse heat engines, dealing with energy conversion, real gas behaviour, heat exchange and the validity of simplifying assumptions.
  • 3 Implement the properties of fluids, perform hydrostatic calculations, apply Bernoulli’s equation and mass conservation to flow situations, apply momentum conservation to determine forces and have a superficial knowledge of boundary layers.
  • 4 Calculate the flow and head loss in pipes, determine operational aspects of a pump in a system and describe the basic types of fluid machinery.
