The Master of Analytics with a major in business equips you with both the technical ability and the competence in critical thinking needed to transform massive amounts of data into information that is useful for crucial business decisions.
The Master of Analytics (Business) is sponsored by the world’s leading business analytics software provider - SAS. That means that upon completion of this degree you will receive the globally-recognised SAS certification.
SAS business insights also ensure your lecturers are up-to-date with developments in the industry and you will gain access to SAS’ global network of clients. This agreement is the first of its kind with a New Zealand university.
When you graduate with a Masters in Analytics (Business) you will have gained the skills to understand a business problem and have the skills to use analytics to generate information to provide realistic business solutions. In this business major, you can choose to apply your new-found knowledge and techniques to either marketing, finance or supply chain management.
You will learn about different data sources available, how data is stored and retrieved, and learn the pivotal skills of data mining and statistical analysis.
At Massey we ensure that your learning is firmly based in a real-world business context. We believe that in order to help you identify the most appropriate technique and data to address a problem, you need to understand the real challenges and context which businesses face.
The Master of Analytics will help you understand all these things, as well as give you training in communicating your findings in a compelling way to a business audience.
This learning includes an applied project, where you will use the knowledge you have gained in a commercial organisation.
The skills you will learn in the Master of Analytics meet the growing demand for graduates capable of harvesting, processing, analysing and presenting data in ways that encourage informed and effective organisational decision making. You will learn how to extract useful information from big data, while maintaining data security and privacy.
This will open up to you the increasing numbers of roles for people who can combine business skills with data analysis and who have excellent communication skills.
Your course of study in the Master of Analytics will cover fundamental data analysis tools, including data mining, statistics, and econometrics. You will then learn how these tools are applied in a business specialisation of your choosing: marketing, finance, or supply chain management. In the last phase of study you will complete an applied analytics project, where the knowledge and skills you have learnt will be utilised to address a real-world problem in collaboration with an organisation.

“I was attracted to Massey University due to the high quality of its business school and the highly knowledgeable and sincerely friendly staff…”
The analytics industry is rapidly expanding due to the explosive rise of big data and I felt that the Master of Analytics would therefore broaden my career horizons. I was also looking to expand my functional skill-set, so the practicality of this course really appealed to me. Alternative degrees are more theoretical and research-based.
As I was specifically interested in the application of analytics to finance, the fact that Massey University was one of the first universities in New Zealand to be endorsed as a programme partner by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute spoke volumes to me.
In my opinion, what really sets Massey University apart has to be the students and staff who bestow the campus with life beyond brick and mortar. I have not encountered more genuine hearts and brilliant minds anyplace else, and I owe a great deal to these individuals not just in terms of knowledge, but also in terms of life wisdom and personal development.
While studying at Massey, I have had many fascinating and interesting experiences including working as a research assistant, tutoring a paper with more than 300 students, helping run the Investments Club, and managing almost $30,000 of real money as a fund manager in the University's Student Investment Fund.
Overall, my study experience at university has been like hiking a capricious trail - there have been highs and there have been lows, but the view at the end has been worth it all!
My ambition from here is not to just simply take part, but to be someone who makes a difference and who one day, will alter landscapes - not just in business, but in greater society as well. After graduation, I am taking up a permanent finance and economics consulting role at PwC.
