I am proud to call myself a software engineer. Back in 2003 when I studied, software engineering was part of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) whilst today this subject is covered by the Bachelor of Information Sciences. I enjoyed my four years at Massey so much, that I stuck around to add a Master of Science (Computer Science) to my qualifications.
After being the chief technical officer and co-owner of a Java-based software start-up and spending some time as a software contractor, I joined Sun Microsystems - the creator of the Java language. As a software engineer, my role was to be part of the team developing future versions of the Java software development kit. When Sun was purchased by Oracle in 2010, I became an Oracle employee and soon my position changed to being the technical lead responsible for an entire category of functionality, overseeing multiple developers, whilst still spending most of my time coding.
On top of being a software engineer, I’m a frequent speaker at international conferences related to my work. I’ve spoken all around the world, as far-reaching as Japan, India, Belgium, the US, Australia and New Zealand. This is a great experience, and not something you’d typically expect being a software engineer.
Even though most of my Oracle colleagues are located in California, I’ve chosen to remain in New Zealand for the superior lifestyle. This doesn’t impact me at all - one of the best perks of being a software engineer - with your laptop you can work from anywhere.
