How Do I Find Statistics?

You can find statistical resources using Discover, Subject Guides and on the Internet.

New Zealand Statistics

Start here:

  • Statistics New Zealand website
Includes Census, economic, education, environment, government finance, health, income and work, industry, people and communities and population
  • New Zealand Statistics Subject Guide
Includes historical statistics, time series data from 1840 onwards, guides to finding NZ statistics, demographic, trade, financial, government statistics and more

For statistics on other countries explore these resources.

Subject Statistics

Use the Library's Subject Guides. Many guides contain links to statistics sources relevant to that subject (e.g. for health statistics select the Health & Nursing subject guide).  If the subject guide does not have a section on statistics, try looking in the “More Information” section.

The links on our Subject Guides are to statistics published in different formats:

  • Specific reports which contain statistics
  • Websites containing statistics
  • Databases containing reports and statistics

You may need to browse or search within the report, database or website to find the statistics. If the website has a search box try to think of keywords and synonyms that will find your topic. Add extra terms like “statistics”, “report”, or “profile”.
