The Library for People with Disabilities

The Library provides the following services for people with temporary or permanent impairment. Supporting documentation or a medical certificate may be required for students who are not registered with Disability Services.

Physical Access

Albany Library: Provides mobility parking near the Library. The main entrance doors are automatic and all levels of the Library are accessible by lift.

Hokowhitu Library: An outside lift is provided to enter the Library, and an internal lift to reach the mezzanine floor. A book lift is available to carry books to the Ground Floor.

Turitea Library: Provides mobility parking near the back of the Library. The Library has a Ground Floor entrance at the front of the Library with ramp access, automatic doors, and lifts to upper levels.

Wellington Library: Provides mobility parking near the Library. The main entrance doors are automatic and all levels of the Library are accessible by lift, although lift access to the 5B level is from outside the Library. Registered students using the Disabilities Services Computer Lab (5B04) can ring Wellington Library for help if they need to access the Library from this level.

Toilets

Albany Library: Provides accessible toilets on all levels of the Library.

Hokowhitu Library: An accessible toilet is not provided within the Library. The nearest toilets are adjacent to the café in the Campus Centre building.

Turitea Library: Provides accessible toilets on the Ground Floor in the north (Registry) end and in the car park wing of the Library.

Wellington Library: An accessible toilet is not provided within the Library. The nearest toilets are adjacent to the café (Tussock) in the Student Services Trust building. Another toilet is available on the ground floor of Block 5 beside the stairs (5A04).

Equipment

Disability Services provide some equipment and/or rooms in the Libraries. Access to these should be arranged through the Disability Services campus contacts.

Albany Library: A Disabilities Study Room with screen magnification software, a CCTV magnifier, read text software and a scanner.

Hokowhitu Library: A computer to assist visually impaired students, located near the Journals Display on Level 1.

Turitea Library: A resource room which contains specialised equipment and ergonomic furniture for people with disabilities. 

Wellington Library: The Disability Services Computer Lab (5B04) is adjacent to the Library.

Photocopying

Library staff can provide some assistance for people experiencing difficulty using self-service photocopiers. Arrangements made in advance are appreciated. Please contact the Lending Desk at each Library.

Postal Service for Library Resources

Internally-enrolled students with a disability who are unable to visit a campus regularly may be provided with the Distance Library Service. This means books and photocopied material can be sent to your home address. Please contact the Distance Library Service if you believe you may be eligible.

Assistance with Collecting Library Resources

Library staff can provide some assistance with collecting books from shelves. Arrangements made in advance are appreciated. Please contact the Lending Desk at each Library. Large amounts of collecting are best organised through Disability Services.

Individual Help with Finding Information

Individual assistance may be provided for people with a disability who need help with finding information. Please contact us for help. Individual appointments may be made with Library staff. Help can also be provided by email.

One-to-one research consultations are available for postgraduate students who need assistance in starting a thesis or research project. Please contact our College Liaison Librarians or submit a request for a research consultation.
