Manawatu Campus - the Leading Edge

Welcome to Massey University's original home base - Palmerston North. Massey Manawatu is New Zealand's premiere and largest institution for the life sciences, agricultural, horticultural and veterinary teaching and research and is a leader in industrial innovation through areas such as food science and technology, biotechnology, advanced material sciences and product development.

The Manawatu campus has two sites:

  • Turitea - renowned for its beautiful park-like setting of huge trees and attractive gardens, and
  • Hokowhitu - on the city side of the Manawatu River, near the lagoon.

Massey Manawatu offers 150 programmes across the spectrum of Sciences, Education, Business and Humanities and Social Sciences. It is the only place in New Zealand to offer a Veterinary Science degree (BVSc). The Massey BVSc is recognised in both Australasia and America and allows you to practise in these countries.

The campus also offers 75 postgraduate programmes and is the engine room of the University's research culture. It is home for many of New Zealand's top researchers who have earned Massey an international reputation. One example is the prestigious Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution which is a Centre of Research Excellence.

It is also the home of the University's extramural programme. Every year around 20,000 students, in New Zealand and overseas, learn at a distance with the help of lecturers in Palmerston North. It is a venture without peer in New Zealand.

Massey University has carved out a reputation for being innovative and progressive against the triple objectives of excellence, relevance and national contribution. In addition, Massey University Manawatu:

  • appointed the world's first Professor of Biotechnology in 1965
  • is the second place in the world to establish a food technology department
  • offers the only undergraduate degree in genetics in New Zealand
  • established a Chair in te reo Māori which is the first of its kind
  • is the only place to offer a total immersion three year teaching diploma, all in Māori
  • was the first place to offer a distance teacher education programme totally off-site and via email
  • has the only university aviation school in New Zealand.

A range of services to support your learning, well-priced accommodation and easy access by way of a free city-wide bus service, on foot or by pedal power make this university-city a student destination of choice
