Exchange fees, costs, scholarships and StudyLink , Ngā utu me ngā karahipi hei ako ki tāwāhi me Hoto Akoranga

You'll need to cover the costs of your Massey fees, visa, and travel and living expenses while you're on exchange – but you can keep getting StudyLink payments, and you could get a scholarship.

Exchange costs

Tuition fees

While you're away on exchange, you'll still be enrolled as a student at Massey – so you'll pay your fees to us as normal. You'll be studying full-time, so we'll charge you for 60 credits (four courses) for each semester you're away.

You won't have to pay tuition fees to the university you study at (the 'host university') but you might have to pay other small fees, for things like a student card or field trips.

Other costs

You're responsible for covering all the costs of your exchange. You'll have to pay for:

  • a student visa (for some countries)
  • flights
  • health and travel insurance
  • non-tuition fees and course materials at the host university
  • living expenses
  • travel in your host country.

Many of our partner universities' websites contain information about the cost of living in their cities. Email our International Mobility Team if you need advice.

Some countries allow exchange students to work part-time – but it's important to make sure you have enough money to pay for your exchange without needing a job. Getting used to study in another country can be challenging.

Getting funding for your exchange

You might be able to get money from a grant or scholarship to pay for some of your exchange.

Travel grants

Student Exchange Scholarship

You are eligible to be considered for a Student Exchange Scholarship if you’re applying for the Massey Student Exchange programme.

You can apply for this and other Massey scholarships through the student portal. A selection committee will base its decision on:

  • your application
  • your academic record
  • whether you're getting any other scholarships.

Explore the World scholarship

If you apply to go on exchange to an ISEP university, you'll be considered for an Explore the World scholarship. Your application will be considered for this scholarship automatically – you don't need to do anything extra.

The committee will decide if you qualify, based on your application and academic record. You can get an Explore the World scholarship even if you get funding from other scholarships.

Scholarships

We have lots of scholarships for exchange students. Some are for students at particular Massey Schools and Colleges, like Massey Business School or the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Others are for exchanges to specific places, like Germany.

Getting StudyLink on exchange

You can keep getting your StudyLink student loan or grant while you're on exchange. StudyLink will organise your payments around the semester dates at your host university.

1, Apply for StudyLink online as usual

Do this at the time you would normally apply, if you weren't going away.

2, Fill in the StudyLink Overseas Study Application form

You need to wait until you've officially been accepted by your host university to fill the form in.

3, Send us your form and supporting documents

Send the original hard copies (not printouts or PDFs) of your application form and any supporting documents to our International Mobility Team. They'll complete pages four and five and send the form to StudyLink for you.
