This is an archive of business records associated with New Zealand’s agricultural industries. It started when dairy companies began to merge or close down from the 1960s onwards. It has particularly good coverage of companies in Northland, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatū, Southern Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Christchurch, Banks Peninsula and Southland. Most of the records date from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Also held are records of meat companies, rabbit boards, stores specialising in supplying farmers, etc.
The types of records held for each company vary, and for some companies little is available. Usually minutes of meetings can be viewed, and some companies also have share registers, financial records, milk production records, company histories, legal papers, photographs and plans.
Access: University Staff, students and members of the public are welcome to use the Archives by appointment during opening hours: 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. However, the Dairy Records Archivist may need to restrict access to some material under the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993, and for preservation reasons.
Location: Library, Library Road, Manawatū Campus, Palmerston North.
Dairy Records Archivist: Norah Mosen. Phone (06) 356-9099 ext. 7610
