Create healthy workplaces

With a Massey Graduate Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, you can improve the working lives of New Zealanders while boosting your career.

What is it like?

Transfer your learning to your workplace

Occupational safety and health (OSH) has become an integral part of business in New Zealand. With a Grad Dip (OSH) you can help improve the effects of the working environment on the health and wellbeing of workers.

We spend a third of our lives at work, so workplaces contribute significantly to our health. Injuries and ill-health are two problems all workers potentially face. If you want a career helping to reduce that burden on individuals and the nation, then this is the qualification for you.

You will learn how to create healthy workplaces, including improving the interrelationship of people at work, the work they do, and their working environment.

Choose from a range of papers

At Massey, you can choose from a wide range of papers that reflect the multidisciplinary nature of OSH. You’ll learn about hazards and risks in the workplace, how to assess and manage those risks and create healthy workplaces.

Study when it suits you

Our distance learning option lets you study when and where is most convenient for you. You can fit study around your work and family commitments.

Get an internationally recognised qualification

The Graduate Diploma in OSH is internationally accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (UK). You will be eligible for graduate membership of IOSH, which is the largest OSH practitioner professional association outside the USA. Membership leads to registration as an OSH practitioner.

Graduate Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health
Managing Director / Occupational Health and Safety Consultant - Working for Health Limited

“The programme content was really relevant to my work and I was able to feel more confident in my role…”

My work in the field of occupational health and safety consultancy is extremely varied. One day I could be at a smelter conducting noise measurements, the next I could be in a small office providing education to a team of lawyers on office ergonomics, and then I might be called offshore to conduct health checks on an oil and gas facility.

There is a huge variation of people, workplaces and industries. And they all have health and safety risks that require managing. The variety is what I love most about working in occupational health and safety.

In response to the Pike River tragedy and New Zealand’s poor safety record, our country is seeing a massive shake-up to the way we manage health and safety risks in workplaces. As the legislation and penalties get tougher, we will see a greater need for trained Health and Safety practitioners to assist in improving our nation’s poor level of compliance.

I chose to take the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health at Massey as I had just commenced working in the field. This course helped me to understand the theories and legislation that underpinned my practice as an Occupational Health Nurse.

I had very little health and safety knowledge when I started out. You need to have both credible theoretical learning as well as hands-on experience to be an effective health and safety practitioner.

The Massey programme gave me both practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of health and safety risk management in business. The programme content was really relevant to my work and I was able to feel more confident in my role.

My experience at Massey was awesome! As an extramural student I found that I had access to so many support services and I really felt a part of the Massey community. Massey is such a credible name and institution. I feel proud to say that I am a Massey University graduate.
