Enhancing Dietary Assessment for New Zealand Schoolchildren

This study tests a modified 24-hour dietary recall tool to accurately monitor nutrition in Auckland schoolchildren aged 9 to 13.

About this study

Diet contributes to children’s growth and development, educational performance and attainment, health and well-being.

We are testing the feasibility and validity of a modified 24-hour dietary recall tool for research to understand better the current food group and nutrient intake in New Zealand schoolchildren.

Inclusion criteria

For this study, we will include children aged 9 to 13 years, and their parents or caregivers. Contributing (years 1 to 6), full (years 1 to 8), and intermediate (years 7 to 8) schools in Auckland will be invited to participate in this study.

The role of the school will be to distribute study invitations to parents/caregivers via a letter to children and through the school newsletter, personal communication, and social media.

A combined briefing session will be held with volunteering parents, children, and teachers (if interested), during which study procedures will be explained and any questions answered.

Incentives for participation

Participation will not incur any direct costs. As a koha (gift), each child-parent pair will be reimbursed gift vouchers valued at $75, when data collection is complete.

Patient information

Download the participant information sheet to get detailed information about what’s involved.

The information sheet will help you decide if you and your child would like to take part. It sets out why we are doing the study, what your and your child's participation would involve, what the benefits and risks to you and your child might be, and what would happen after the study ends. We will go through this information with you and answer any questions you may have.
