Tourism is a key economic activity that contributes to growth, employment generation and poverty reduction in developing countries. Mr Camacho Murillo investigated several factors for the Colombian case that determine international and domestic tourists' choice of destination, including tourists' risk-associated variables and destination attributes. He found that an increase in politically motivated violent incidents in Colombia adversely influences international tourists' preferences in the long term. International tourists from high-income countries are more averse to politically motivated violence in Colombia than middle-income nations. Domestic tourists in Colombia are more likely to travel to a destination that offers comparatively more man-made attractions for leisure and recreation, and that these attractions tend to lessen the negative effect of distance on domestic tourists' choices. The results confirm the positive role of tourism activities towards poverty reduction and economic convergence between the provinces of Colombia.
