Mental health consequences of mass violence cause severe damage and result in longer lasting effects. Ms Buaniaw investigated mental health service delivery in response to the long-term and ongoing violent conflict in southern Thailand. She found mental health communication programmes should focus on community-based approaches and coordinate with community partners. Informal, flexible styles of partnership are most suitable for uncertain situations, programme deliverers need to be concerned with cultural sensitivities, and leadership is an important factor for disaster management. Her long-term focus enabled the identification of changes in response to policy shifts and the extent to which these programmes are sustained over time. Her research makes an original contribution to health communication and adds insight into the successes and challenges involved in the delivery of mental health communication programmes to people exposed to violent attacks and who live with stress over a long period of time.
