Mr Pham''sresearch stems from his experience with students who come from rural areas in Vietnam and his concern for their language proficiency and language learning motivation. Adopting a person-in-context view, he examined ecological elements within and across settings and relationships that influence the motivation of students learning English in a rural high school in Southern Vietnam. His findings reveal that while language learning affordances were evident in both formal and informal learning settings, students developed diverse personal motivational trajectories. Their motivational constructions resulted from a synergy of environmental and personal elements, depending on their individual language learning situations and social relationships. His research illustrated the value of interpreting the situated and dynamic nature of language learning motivation using an ecological paradigm. It offers a fresh theoretical and methodological approach for future research geared towards lifewide adaptive perspectives on English language teaching and learning.
