Mr McMorrow is a learning advisor at a New Zealand university. He set out to provide more effective writing support for students within their degree programmes, rather than just through generic workshops and one-to-one consultations. His research involved working together with staff and students in one university programme over three years to develop discipline-specific workshops and resources. He documented the process and its impacts through interviews, focus groups, verbal reports and a reflective journal. He found that informal collaboration, focused on small wins, was an effective means of bringing about positive, incremental change in a dynamic tertiary environment. In addition, one-to-one support continued to play a key role as part of an expanded set of programme-based support services and the culture of distributed, complementary expertise within the programme allowed Mr McMorrow to contribute to writing pedagogy both indirectly, through supporting staff, and directly, through classroom teaching.
