Internationalisation of higher education is a process influenced by complex contextual factors at different levels (global, national, local, institutional). In the context of Vietnamese higher education, these factors have been under-researched. In developing a contextualised set of evaluation criteria for examining internationalisation, in collaboration with a key public university and two supplementary public universities in Vietnam, Ms Nguyen's research found how different contextual factors influenced the implementation of internationalisation in the current context of Vietnamese higher education. The internationalisation criteria identified in the study was found to be particularly influential by the complexity of national and institutional factors in this context. This finding highlighted a key difference from other higher education contexts internationally, where wider global factors created internationalisation efforts that tend to be more outwardly focused. Ms Nguyen's research confirms the critical importance of national and institutional contextual factors in developing an appropriate model for studying internationalisation.
