Ms Aini explored the identity formation of six English teachers and three pre-service teachers in Tegal City, Indonesia, using identity-agency and life-course agency as frameworks. A qualitative approach and case study methods were employed to gather data through interviews, observation, narrative accounts, photographs, documents, and online contact. Her findings showed elements that shaped professional identity including religion, learning experiences, significant others, regulations, and social engagement. The English teachers' narratives indicated that they did not initially plan to be English teachers, but their complex trajectories had led them to the profession. On the contrary, the pre-service teachers' narratives showed that they intended to be English teachers, but they ended up using English differently. The implications for theory and practice showed that identity-agency and life-course agency could be useful development tools in understanding the process of teachers' identity formation as well as minimising the praxis shock that occurred in their professional lives.
