The provision of high quality cost effective health care requires that health professionals are able to make informed decisions using information systems that are appropriate and well integrated so that information can be safely shared and available for the right person, in the right format, and at the right time. The research provides a framework and survey tool for assessing information technology sophistication in primary care organisations and a conceptual model of how GPs use electronic clinical decision support. It also identifies five areas in which changes can be made to improve the utilisation of Information systems for clinical decision support.
