What is it like?

Keen to become a professional accountant? Massey University’s Bachelor of Accountancy is the only Bachelor of Accountancy offered in New Zealand. It will give you the skills you need to be a sought-after employee, both in New Zealand and internationally.

It is a specialised degree that leads you to an accountancy career and membership of one of the professional accounting organisations.

Study to suit your interests

The BAcc degree includes a solid foundation of compulsory papers, but it also provides some flexibility to choose papers for yourself. It's a specialised degree that can lead to an accountancy career and membership in one or more of the professional accounting organisations.

Many career options

There are more employment and career opportunities in accounting than there are in many other areas of study because the management of financial information underpins all business activity.

Learn from leading business experts

The Massey Business School is one of the country’s leading and largest business schools - it is ranked among the top five per cent of business schools globally and is AACSB accredited.

You will learn from well-respected academics and business experts, gaining an international perspective on the major that you choose.

Our School of Accountancy has accreditation from national and international professional institutions including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). Massey University’s accountancy and finance programme ranks in the 100 universities in the world by QS (Quacquareli Symonds) rankings. Our lecturers are actively researching, bringing the most relevant developments in accounting theory and practice to your study.

What will you learn

The Bachelor of Accountancy programme will give you the knowledge and technical skills needed to analyse accounting and business problems. You will gain a solid foundation in accounting and finance rounded out with the all-important inter-personal and technical skills, knowledge and critical thinking essential for success in today’s business environment.

You’ll understand how best to communicate and use financial information to support business decisions.

The BAcc degree will also give you an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment that commercial organisations and accounting professionals must work within. You'll learn to identify and evaluate ethical dilemmas and provide logical ways to resolve them.

When you graduate, you'll be able to demonstrate self-directed and independent learning. You'll communicate effectively through speech, writing, and multiple forms of media, and you'll be able to measure, analyse and communicate information about economic transactions and events in the global economy.

Finally, you'll learn the concepts and processes needed to protect, validate and attest to the integrity and reliability of accounting information.

If you’d like to take accountancy as part of a broader business qualification, consider the Bachelor of Business Studies (Accountancy).

A good fit if you:

  • Know you would like to be an accountant
  • Enjoy working in a team and meeting new people
  • Would like a career with a new challenge every day

Audit Intermediate - RSM

“The lecturers played a big part in my study experience, their passion and support was invaluable in terms of getting me to where I am today…”

My mother was an accountant and I wanted to follow in her footsteps.

I started doing my degree extramurally before deciding to go full time as an internal student. Massey is well known for its extramural programme and offers flexibility for working mature students such as myself. This is my second degree - I also have a Bachelor of Business Studies in finance. The first time around I went to Massey Auckland so coming back was an easy decision to make.

RSM offers their more senior auditors secondment opportunities to the United States. I look forward to going on a secondment in a year or two.
