Clients’ perspectives on their experiences of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy have been paid little attention in psychological research to date. Ms Hallas’s research investigated clients’ perspectives to gain insight into the outcomes clients considered valuable and the factors they perceived had contributed to therapeutic change. The findings showed that some clients valued outcomes and experienced change in ways that Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy has conceptualised, emphasising the reduction of symptoms and therapy techniques, while others valued alternative outcomes and change components, such as increased self-understanding and the transformative effects of the therapy relationship. The study suggested that practitioners may be able to assist clients to address a wider variety of concerns in a number of ways that are additional to those previously conceptualised.
