Ms Gallie used a bacterial model system to investigate evolutionary strategies that enable organisms to survive in unpredictable environments. Her findings provide the first direct insight into how these survival strategies may arise, revealing that a single genetic change can generate an extraordinarily powerful survival strategy. The unexpected simplicity of this evolutionary path suggests that evolutionary strategies may have been among the first survival strategies for life in unpredictable environments.
