In his study of Sound in the Military Environment, Mr Rapley designed and developed numerous measurement devices and techniques in order to cope with situations unusual in standard acoustical measurement practice. He was able to measure the sound and vibration received binaurally by personnel during military manoeuvres by the use of manikins, kitted out in full military gear, that he equipped with model human ear canals of his own design. He also developed a water-filled manikin allowing him to measure vibration as it would be received by human internal organs. He produced the first sound mapping in occupied military vehicles, and defined the effects on hearing acuity and cognition that such sound exposure may produce.
