Financial aid consumer information requirements

The information on this page is a legal requirement Massey University must provide about financial aid, our campuses, facilities and policies.

Institutional and financial assistance information for students

Massey will annually provide a NOTICE directly (one-on-one distribution) to all enrolled students linking to the below consumer information, including the various disclosures and how to obtain the full disclosures.

Application process

Each year, everyone applying for US financial aid needs to fill in a:

  • UA Financial Aid Declaration
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

If you're a new student at Massey, you need to fill in the financial aid enquiry form as well. The links and details to this can be found in the Application Forms section of the Massey University Financial Aid webpage.

Award amount determination

Your loan is unique to you and there are criteria for determining the amount of a student's award. You can use the eligibility estimation tool at Federal Student Aid to find out if you qualify and how much you may get. However, this is only an estimate, the only way to find out for sure is to apply.

Federal aid money is disbursed to Massey, which is used to pay your tuition fees and then transfer any money left into your New Zealand bank account. Our website has further details regarding the disbursement of your loan and our US Federal Student Aid Loan Disbursement Policy.

US Financial Aid students at Massey University should research all the details about student loans before accepting your US Financial Aid package. We would recommend you visit Studentaid.gov to research all the different loans available through the Direct Loan program.

The appeals process is outlined in the SAP policy.

Entrance and exit counselling

Our entrance counselling ensures a student understands the terms and conditions, your student loan, as well as your rights and responsibilities. Entrance counselling must be completed before receiving any US financial Aid loan funding. Our exit counselling must be completed when you leave school or drop below half-time enrolment. The purpose of your exit counselling is to ensure you understand your student loan obligations and are aware of your rights and responsibilities as you prepare for repayment.

A student will be emailed instructions on how to complete this requirement. If a student drops out without notifying Massey University, the student will be emailed exit counselling instructions within 30 days of separation that must be completed as soon as possible.

Providing borrower information at separation

Massey will collect personal information at the time of exit counselling. This will be given to the student’s loan servicer within 60 days. No permission is needed as you granted this authorization upon signing the promissory note.

Private Education Loans

Massey will ensure that any student enquiring or indicating they may look to a private education loan is informed that they may qualify for FSA loans and that the terms and conditions of FSA loans may be more favourable than the provisions of private education loans.

Schools as private lenders

Massey does not solicit, make, or extend private education loans, and therefore is not considered to be a private education lender nor therefore subject to the Federal Reserve’s regulations on private educational lenders.

Preferred lender list

Massey does not have a preferred lender agreement with any specific lender of private education loans and will not endorse, promote, or recommend any United States-based private education loan provider who may offer loans for study at foreign schools. Massey University will, in most cases, work with any private lender a prospective borrower decides to use. However prospective borrowers should be aware that most private lenders choose not to offer loans to students studying outside the United States. Any reference to Sallie Mae in Massey University communications or on the Massey University website does not represent the existence of a ‘preferred’ lender. If other private lending companies start to offer private education loans for study at foreign universities, they will be given equal visibility. Massey University has no affiliation with and receives no financial incentives from Sallie Mae or any other private lender.

Code of conduct concerning loans

Massey University financial aid staff will always maintain exemplary standards of professional conduct in all aspects of carrying out their responsibilities, specifically including all dealings with any entities involved in student financial aid. In doing so, the Massey University financial aid staff will:

  • Refrain from taking any official action through which an employee may derive a personal benefit or financial gain.
  • Refrain from taking any action we believe is contrary to law, school policy, or not in the best interests of our students.
  • Ensure that the information we provide is accurate, unbiased, and does not reflect any preference arising from actual or potential personal gain. Although Massey University participates in the Direct Loan program, we have not and will not engage in any contractual relationship with a private loan lender nor steer our students to one lender over another. We do not have a preferred lender list of private loan lenders and will certify any loan from any lender the student chooses.
  • Refrain from soliciting or accepting anything of value from any lender or financial institution involved in the making, holding, consolidating, or processing of student loans, including anything of value in exchange for serving on an advisory body or participating in a training activity sponsored by any such entity.
  • Disclose to Massey University any relationship which may be a conflict of interest with any entity involved in any aspect of student financial aid.
