Beginning teachers' preparedness to teach Maori children

In light of growing concern about diversity, disparity and equitable rights, Miss Kenrick’s research examined beginning teachers’ perception of their preparedness to teach Maori children. The consequence of a prepared or ill-prepared teacher is reflected in the student achievement and educational outcomes. She found that beginning teachers did not perceive themselves to be entirely prepared to teach Maori children. Amongst a number of concerns, beginning teachers were concerned about their knowledge of Maori, Maori language and tikanga and their ability to form positive relationship with Maori learners, their whanau and community. Teacher education and induction programmes did not provide a comprehensive enough focus of these concerns that beginning teachers perceived were integral to a culturally responsive environment for Maori learners, which in turn, will lead to better outcomes for Maori learners.
