Undergraduate plant science scholarships 

Many of the scholarships below are suitable for undergraduates studying plant science in agriculture or horticulture. While fewer are suitable for those studying plant ecology or biology, some will be appropriate.

AGCARM Undergraduate Horticultural Scholarship
Closing date: 31 March   
Open to full time students undertaking a degree in production horticulture at Massey University and who have completed their first year of the degree.

Alex C P Chu Trade for Training Scholarship
Closing date: 1 November   
The Alex C P Chu Trade for Training Scholarship provides assistance to students enrolled in either a postgraduate or undergraduate course in agriculture or horticulture at Massey University, and who intends to study overseas as part of their programme.

Allan Kay Undergraduate Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
For students enrolled full-time in agriculture, horticulture and animal science. Preference normally will be given to applicants who intend to enter a career in agriculture or horticulture in New Zealand.

Alliance Group Ltd Undergraduate Bursary
Closing date: 18 January
For school leavers intending to study full time in areas relating to the Meat Industry, Primary Production or it's associated industries, including Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Vet Science, Accounting, Marketing, Computer Science, Food Technology, Psychology, & Management.

Andrew Turnbull Scholarship
Closing date: 10 September   
Open to students enrolled in the 1st Year of an undergraduate degree in agriculture at Massey University who were enrolled in the intermediate veterinary programme in Semester 1 of the year of application.

Ann Sinclair Charitable Trust
Closing date: 31 October   
For male students enrolled in a programme relating to any aspect of farming

Annie Rumble Trust
Closing date: 31 October   
For students who reside or attended a post primary school in the Stratford district or adjacent Boroughs, who are studying Horticulture

Atihau-Ravensdown University Scholarship
Closing date: 31 October
Open to Atihau Whanganui Incorporation shareholders and their descendants,for undergraduate study in an agricultural or horticultural degree. Only one scholarship is available at any one time and it does not reopen until the holder completes their U/G degree.

Awarua Trust
Closing dates: 28 June and 28 November
Open to those from the Morrinsville area who are intending or enrolled in an undergraduate course of study at Massey University in agricultural related courses.

BNZ Partners Maori Scholarships
Closing date: 10 March
Open to students of Maori descent who will be enrolling for second and third year full time undergraduate study for either a Bachelor of Agricommerce, or Bachelor of Agriscience in the following academic year.

Ballance Agri-Nutrients Scholarship
Closing date: 28 October   
For students intending to do tertiary study in the general primary industry field or in engineering.

Bay of Plenty Farmers Education Trust
Closing date: 15 November
Open to students from the Bay of Plenty studying an agricultural and /or veterinary course for at least one year, either full or part time and any level at a NZ University or Polytechnic.

Beef and Lamb New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarships
Closing date: Early February   
Available to assist students with a good academic record, and a passion for the agricultural sector to undertake a Bachelors degree, including Honours, that will provide them with an education & training to support sustainable development of the NZ Meat Industry.

Botanic Gardens of Australia and New Zealand (NZ) Summer Internships
Closing date: 21 October
Summer internships are available at NZ’s leading public gardens. The aim is to support and develop students who may be interested in entering the NZ parks or amenity gardens industry. There will be opportunity to undertake a small research or development project related to their field of study

Clark Fletcher Memorial Citrus Bursary
Closing date: 30 November   
For students likely to return benefits to the citrus fruit growing industry

Counties Kiwifruit Growers ASB Study Grant
Closing date: 31 October   
For students resident in the Franklin District area studying fruit growing

DairyNZ Scholarship
Closing date: 7 December
For NZ citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in a Bachelors degree that is Dairy related

Don Scott Agricultural Education Trust Grants
Closing date: 19 December
Open to individuals or groups whose principal place of residence is within the boundaries of the Federated Farmers Provinces of Manawatu/Rangitikei and Wanganui, to pursue agricultural related studies or group learning initiatives.

Doris Elizabeth Geraldine Swadling Award
Closing date: Mid January
For students under the age of 21 years, usually resident in the Taranaki province, who wish to become farmers.

Elsie and Laura Lehmann Trust
Closing date: 31 October
Open to students under 25yrs of age who are enrolling in agriculture or farming related studies (including vet), and who attended school or live (or once lived) in or close to the Borough of Stratford.

FMG Agricultural Scholarship
Closing date: 15 December
Open to students intending to study agriculture full-time at either Massey University or Lincoln University

Glad McArthur Horticultural Scholarship
Closing date: 30 November   
For NZ citizens or permanent residents who attended a Central Otago High School, or whose home is in Central Otago and who are enrolled in horticulture related study

Gosling Ornamental Horticulture Bursary
Closing date: 10 March
For students enrolled full-time for a degree in horticulture at Massey University. Applicants must show in their application that they are interested in pursuing a career in growing ornamental plants, either in the nursery industry, cut-flower production or management of parks.

Harry Tolley & L J Wild Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled in a bachelors degree in agriculture or horticulture at MU. Preference given to former pupils of Feilding High School (FAHS)

Harwood Farm Trust: Scholastic Grants
Closing date: 27 November   
Open to students undertaking or teaching an agricultural course. Preference may be given to persons who can demonstrate greater need and who are in some way connected with the East Coast of the North Island. Evidence of need and connection are required.

Hawkes Bay Farm Improvement Club Trust Scholarships
Closing date: 10 March   
For students that have successfully completed the first year of the BApplSc degree and who normally reside in the Central Hawkes Bay District Council or Dannevirke Community Board or Woodville Community Board. Evidence of residential qualification is required.

Hawkes Bay Fruitgrowers' Association Charitable Trust Horticultural Scholarship
Closing date: 1 November   
For students studying pipfruit, summerfruit, or kiwifruit who reside in the Hawkes Bay

Helen Royle Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
For female students enrolled full time in agriculture or horticulture at Massey University who have successfully completed the first year of the degree

Henry Marfell Scholarships
Closing date: 31 March   
For former students of New Plymouth Boys High School who have completed at least one year of full time study leading to an Agricultural Science or Veterinary Science qualification

Holt Forest Trust Scholarship
Closing date: 30 November
For students studying in all disciplines relating to the forestry industry including specific areas of saw milling, harvesting, processing and utilisation.

Horticulture NZ Undergraduate Scholarships
Closing date: 20 March
For NZ residents undertaking a course in Horticulture who have a special interest in the fruit or vegetable industry

Hugh Williams Ravensdown Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: Early December
For descendents of Ravensdown shareholders who undertake full time undergraduate study at MU or Lincoln University in an agricultural or horticultural degree

Ingleby Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
Open to students domiciled in NZ who are enrolled full-time for an undergraduate degree in agriculture at Massey University.

Institute of Fundamental Sciences Summer Scholarship - Plant Sciences
Closing date: 20 September
Eight Summer Scholarships across subject areas of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nanoscience, Physics, Plant Sciences and Statistics are available to MU students who wish to undertake research work under the supervision of a member of the Institute Staff.

J S Yeates Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
For 2nd & 3rd yr students enrolled full time in a bachelors degree in Horticulture who reside in the Manawatu region, preferably Northern Manawatu

James Bull Agricultural Scholarship
Closing date: Mid December
For students entering their first year of study in the Agriculture field who are resident in Manawatu, Wanganui, Rangitikei, Horowhenua, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay or Ruapehu areas.

James Lockie Stewart Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
Open to male NZ citizens enrolled full time to study Agriculture or Horticulture at MU, either in undergraduate degrees for those who have successfully completed the first year of their degree, or in honours or masters programmes.

John Ayers Summer Scholarship
Closing date: 20 September
Available to a Massey University student majoring in one or more of the subject areas of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nanoscience, Physics, Plant Sciences or Statistics and who wishes to undertake research work under the supervision of a member of the Institute staff

John Court Scholarship
Closing date: 1 February   
For students resident in the Auckland area wishing to study Agriculture

John Michael Stark-Brown Scholarship
Closing date: 31 January   
For former pupils of Oratia Primary School who intend to study full time in the fields of Agriculture or Horticulture at Massey University or Lincoln University

John Young Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 1 February   
Open to family members of Fonterra shareholders residing in the Taranaki region who are undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate degree study relevant to the dairy industry.

Kathleen Stewart Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
Open to female NZ citizens enrolled full time to study Agriculture or Horticulture at MU, either in undergraduate degrees for those who have successfully completed the first year of their degree, or in honours or masters programmes.

Kauri Seed Programme Scholarship
Closing date: 31 August
Established to mentor and encourage U/G ecologists in the early stages of their ecological career so they will become involved in the study and application of ecological science in NZ. The scholarship is for attendance at the annual New Zealand Ecological Society’s conference and student day.

LA Alexander Agricultural College Trust Board Scholarships
Closing date: 28 February   
For students born or educated in Taranaki/Waverley area, studying in agriculture, horticulture and other subjects related to farming including agricultural commerce, environmental management, veterinary science, veterinary nursing, and viticulture.

Landcorp Farming "First Step" Bursary
Closing date: 30 May   
For MU students normally resident in NZ and enrolled in their final year of full-time study in agriculture, agricommerce or animal science for an undergraduate degree, honours degree, graduate or postgraduate diploma.

Massey Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 1 February
For former students of Pukekohe High School studying Agriculture or an allied subject at university level

Murray King Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 31 December   
For students from the Wairarapa enrolling in a degree with particular emphasis on, but is not exclusive to, soil conservation, soil and land management, indigenous forest management, and conservation management.

Murray Richards Bursary
Closing date: 10 March   
For students majoring in Horticulture and studying at the MU Palmerston North Campus

NZ Horticultural Science Advancement Trust Awards
Closing date: 1 November   
Applicants must be financial members of NZSHS or joint members of NZIAS/NZSHS

NZ Young Farmers Study Scholarship

Available to students studying agriculture or agriculturally related topics at Universities

New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association Scholarship
Closing date: 1 November   
One scholarship will be offered annually to a full-time student studying at either Massey University or Lincoln University. Massey University applicants for the scholarship will be in their second year of study towards a Bachelors degree relevant to the grain and seed industry.

New Zealand Grassland Trust Levy Student Scholarship
Closing date: 7 March   
For students enrolled in their second year of an agriculture degree.

Perrin Ag Consultants Scholarship
Closing date: 30 March   
individuals with whakapapa to one of the named organizations who wish to pursue or continue an undergraduate or Honours study in agricultural or horticultural science at either Lincoln or Massey Universities

Pioneer Agricultural Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
Available to students in the 3rd Year of the agriculture major of either Bachelor of AgriScience or Bachelor of Science interested in arable cropping, but students undertaking appropriate honours, postgraduate diploma or Diploma of Rural Studies programmes will also be considered.

Pipfruit New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
Open to candidates who have enrolled at the Palmertson North Campus of Massey University and have successfully completed their first year of study in horticulture, and are interested in pipfruit.

Prof Ren Jizhou Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For Chinese students enrolled in either a first degree or a postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture.

QEII Athol Patterson Bursary
Closing date: 10 March   
Open to applicants who have completed their first year of study, and are enrolled in an undergraduate degree at Massey University either in agriculture or environmental management.

Robert Gibson Methodist Trust Board Bursaries & Student Grants
Closing date: 20 November   
For students studying undergraduate or postgraduate level, with preference being given to orphans, persons taking an agriculture course, & whose parents are Methodists or Presbyterians

Rongotea Lions Club Student Assistance Fund
Closing date: 10 March   
undertaking a degree in agriculture, horticulture, agribusiness or veterinary science at Massey University. Applicants should be from the Manawatu area, with preference given to those from near Rongotea.

Royce Nicholls Trust
Closing date: Late February
Available to New Zealand citizens who intend to take up practical farming as a career or be engaged in some occupation or profession directly concerned with primary production and for which special training is required (including Vet).

Rural Women New Zealand Diamond Jubilee Agricultural Tertiary Bursary
Closing date: 1 March   
For tertiary education in Agriculture or allied subjects. Preference given to students who reside in rural areas

Sir John Logan Campbell Agricultural Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
open to 1st Yr students enrolled full-time for the Bachelor of AgriCommerce degree, or the agriculture major within either the Bachelor of AgriScience degree or the Bachelor of Science degree. Preference given to applicants from an urban background.

Stan Florence Agricultural Industry Scholarship

For candidates already in a Management position in Agricultural, Horticultural or Pastoral industries, to attend a nominated course

Sydney Campbell Undergraduate Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For agricultural and horticultural students domiciled in the Wairarapa South of Woodville & between the coast and the Rimutaka Ranges & who attended secondary schools in the district.

Taupo Animal Welfare Health & Veterinary Society Inc. Undergraduate Scholarships
Closing date: 18 October   
Open to students who attended or currently are attending Taupo, Reporoa or Turangi area Colleges, or are family members of TAWH &Vet Society members and intended or are studying Veterinary Science or an Agricultural related degree at either Massey Uni or Lincoln Uni.

Thornton Memorial Dairy Bursary
Closing date: 10 March   
open to MU students enrolled full-time for the agriculture major in the BAppliSc, BAgriSci or the BSc degree who have completed their 1st year of the degree. Students in Years 2 & 3 of the BAgriCommerce will also be considered if they can show a genuine interest in dairy farming.

Tom Cranswick Memorial Awards
Closing date: 18 October   
Available to students who have completed at least one year of tertiary study in disciplines related to the primary sector and are continuing study in this area.

Tongariro Natural History Society Memorial Award
Closing date: 28 June   
Available to groups and individuals who propose to study the flora and fauna, geology, vulcanology, weather and natural and human history of the Tongariro National Park.

Turners and Growers Undergraduate Scholarships
Closing date: 10 March   
Open to candidates who have enrolled at the Palmerston North Campus of Massey University for a full-time three-year course of study in horticulture.

Waimate Agricultural Trust
Closing date: 30/09/2013   
Available to assist students of any form of agriculture for the purpose of their education by any polytechnic, university or other recognised formal training institution. Applicants must be within the boundaries of Waitaki river in the south, Pareora river in the north.

Wairoa Veterinary Club Scholarship
Closing date: 31 January   
Available to Wairoa Veterinary Club members who have been members for the last five years, or the children of members who have held membership for the last five year membership & be commencing tertiary studies in Vet Science, Veterinary Nursing or Agriculture

Waitawhiti Memorial Scholarship - Undergraduate
Closing date: 10 March   
Candidates must be enrolled full-time for a Bachelor's degree programme in agriculture or horticulture (prefix of 112, 117, 119, 189, 283, 284 or 285) at Massey University. Candidates must be New Zealand citizens and preference will be given to residents of Wairarapa.

William Milverton Scholarship

For students domiciled in NZ who are enrolled full time for an undergraduate or honours degree in agriculture at Massey University.

William Reed Scholarship

For former students of Palmerston North Boys High School enrolled full time for a undergraduate or postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Winton A&P Research Farm Scholarship
Closing date: 1 December
To assist young people financially while they study agricultural related courses through a Tertiary Institute course, either full or part-time.

ZESPRI Horticulture Scholarships
