I came to Massey University after 20 years with Fonterra (New Zealand’s largest dairy manufacturer) as a food microbiologist. There I learned much about New Zealand's leading food industry, participating in problem solving and evaluating rapid methods for microbial analysis covering aspects of food safety and food spoilage. I have developed specialist research interests in biofilms, (which I studied for my PhD), spore formation, alternative methods for cleaning, sanitation and new processing technologies. I really enjoy teaching along with my passion for science.

I receifved the New Zealand Orator award for services to microbiology in 2021.

    Graduate Supervision Statement

I like to maintain a PhD student group of 10 students. The focus of our work is understanding food microbiology biofilms and developing methods for controlling biofilms. This is a multi-disciplined topic involving microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry and engineering. We are proud of our well-equipt microbiology laboratory with specialist equipment (reactors)  for biofilm growth and analysis. Some unique pieces of equipment include an impedance system to monitor microbial growth, heated coil apparatus to determine heat sensitivity and cold plasma to generate antimicrobial compounds. Most of our projects are related to the dairy industry with the ultimate aim to improve the quality and safety. . Recently our work has involved seafood and horticultural products. We have specific expertise and interest in themophilic sporeforming bacteria, enzyme producing psychrotrophic baceria, toxin producers and specific bacterial pathogens, in particular Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Vibrio parahaemoplyticus and Yersinia enterocolitica. We have collaborators in New Zealand (Plant and Food Research,Agresearch,  University of Otago, Aut Univeristy) and internationally (Wageningen University, Athens Agricultural University, University of Guelph). We have always worked closey with the food industry in New Zealand, in particular with Fonterra. We produce on averae 12 scientific journal publications each year and actively encoursge our students to publish as they study. We are proud to see our graduate students in successful careers in academia and industry. We encourage our students to work together and enjoy their studies. We have two group meetings every year where our students share their PhD journay and socialise with other students. Our school also has a monthly journal club which provides a wider contribution from students outside our core area of study. We have weekly meetings with each students and encourage them to present at least one talk at a scientific conference everty year. We are fortunate that our Manawatu campus has excellent facilities and support for students. On the wider campus we have expertise and equipment that students are encouraged to seek to help with their studies. Our technical staff are excellent and provide training and support. More information about our team can be found at the following web site https://sites.massey.ac.nz/sflint/
