Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism
Reporter and host, Story on TV3
There’s never a dull moment for Lachlan Forsyth, reporter and host for TV3 current affairs show Story.
“I’ve travelled to Japan and the Philippines to cover horrific disasters, and I’ve travelled to tiny Northland communities to talk about the tiniest of local issues,” Lachlan says.
After graduating with a BA, followed by seven years in the finance industry, Lachlan had reached a crossroads in his life.
Deciding to make the switch to journalism, he completed the journalism diploma on Massey’s Wellington campus.
“It quickly got me up to speed with the skills I needed to become a journalist,” Lachlan says.
Work internships are an integral part of the diploma and landed him his job.
“My role at TV3 came about after two weeks work experience in the Wellington newsroom. I wore a suit, I asked questions, I made the boss coffee and somehow got a job out of it.”
And Lachlan’s advice for budding journalists?
“Work hard. Know your strengths. Take risks when you need to. And don’t be afraid of failing. And use a pencil for shorthand instead of a pen – it really helps!
“Be keen. Be prepared to work hard. Be compassionate when needed, and be cynical when required. Above all – listen to people. Empathy and understanding are the greatest tools you can have – without those, you’re in the wrong profession.”
