Project Title: Maori and Cancer - the Role of Primary Care

The objective of the study is to develop a framework based on patient, whanau and health professional input to facilitate coordinated, and therefore more effective, cancer care for Maori. Phase One involves a national survey of Maori with cancer and their whanau, to examine key times in the cancer journey: at diagnosis; during treatment; after discharge; at recurrence and; survivorship or death. In Phase Two, the survey responses will be supplemented by semi-structured interviews with Maori cancer patients, their whanau, and Maori health and cancer service providers. The collective findings from both phases will form the basis for the development of an integrated framework across primary, secondary, tertiary and palliative cancer care services to improve the co-ordination of care for Maori experiencing cancer. Phase Three (not included in the current application) will use an action research approach to pilot the framework in four primary care settings in New Zealand.

Project Title: Inequalities in cervical cancer survival in New Zealand

We will study ethnic, socioeconomic and urban/rural differences in cervical cancer survival, and assess which factors may account for such differences. In particular, factors such as stage at diagnosis, co-morbidities, treatment, distance from clinic and screening history will be investigated in relation to survival. We will use routine health records and a case notes review to gather the appropriate information. Statistical analyses will be conducted in order to assess the magnitude of any differences in survival, and the factors that contribute to them. The findings will ultimately be used to minimise barriers and thus reduce inequalities in cervical cancer survival in New Zealand. This work will also provide direction for further investigations into specific areas that are related to cancer survival disparities.
