It’s not every day that staff and students are encouraged to throw paper aeroplanes inside a library but that’s exactly what Christine Harris is doing.

Ms Harris, a distance and document supply services manager, is putting together events to celebrate the 10 years the Library has been part of the Bonus+ Borrowing Scheme.  Free to current Massey students and staff, the scheme allows students and staff to borrow books from participating member libraries in Australia and New Zealand. These include the Australian National University, Deakin University and University of Melbourne.

In the decade that Massey has been a member, 48,610 requests have been processed – the equivalent of 4800 a year. “It is a great initiative and everybody who uses the service really values it. However a lot of staff and students don’t know about BONUS+ and so I really want to get the word out,” Ms Harris says.

Activities running until August 9 are planned at all campuses, and include a prize draw and an acrostic poetry competition (a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase. The first letters of each line are used to spell the message).

Staff and students wanting to enter the paper aeroplane throwing competition can either make their paper plane in advance or on the day. At the end of the competition one of the campus winners will become Massey Library Champion. The dates for the competition (to be held in the library of each campus) are:

Wellington

Friday July 26, 12.00 – 1.00pm

Auckland

Wednesday July 31, 12.00 – 2.00pm

Manawatū

Friday August 9, 12.00 – 2.00pm

During the promotion library staff will be giving out jet plane lollies; randomly-selected distance students will also receive a bag of jet plane lollies with their book orders. For more information about Bonus+
