PhD Fellowship - Organised chaos: Using geometry to explain robust chaotic dynamics in switched dynamical systems

The School of Fundamental Sciences of Massey University, Palmerston North, invites applications for a PhD scholarship in mathematics.

The PhD research will be part of the project ‘Organised chaos: Using geometry to explain robust chaotic dynamics in switched dynamical systems’ lead by Dr. David Simpson.

Dr. Simpson's research focuses on piecewise-smooth dynamical systems with diverse applications.

This project is funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand.

The scholarship covers all tuition fees for international and domestic students and includes a tax-free stipend of NZ$27,500 annually for up to three years.

Eligibility

The ideal candidate should:

  • have a Bachelor of Science (Honours) or a Master of Science (or equivalent) in mathematics
  • be able to start as soon as possible, though the starting date is flexible

Previous graduate-level studies in dynamical systems is highly desirable.

Due to Covid-19 and the worldwide pandemic, we are currently only accepting applications from New Zealand Citizens, New Zealand Residents who are either residing in New Zealand or overseas OR applicants who hold a valid work visa and are currently living in New Zealand.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the scholarship is filled, so apply soon to avoid disappointment!

Application checklist

Please include the following with your application:

  • Cover letter (1-2 pages), explaining your interest and why you think you are suited to the position
  • CV (summarising education, employment, scientific outputs, names of 3 references)
