Policy and Procedure

  1. Court Reservations: The sports hall, squash cts, boxing room, dance/dojo studio, and meeting room can be reserved up to one week in advance by calling 06-350-5080. As standard operating procedures, we reserve the right to limit court reservations and if a user is more than 10 minutes late for their reservation, we will assign the space to another user who may be waiting.

  2. Animals: Are not allowed in the building with the exception of those assisting individuals with disabilities.

  3. Bicycles, roller blades, and skate boards: Are not allowed in the building. Bicycles are not to be locked, chained, or attached in any way to the building structure or handrails. In such circumstances, security will be notified and bicycles will be removed.  Bicycles can be parked and chained in the bicycle racks outside the front entrance of the Recreation Centre.

  4. Fighting or Agressive Behavior: The recreation centre has zero tolerance for violence or intimidation of any sort. Any physical abuse of any person or conduct which threatens or endangers the health and safety of any member of the University will result in immediate removal and disciplinary actions.

  5. Food and Drink: Will only be allowed in the lobby and hallways. All other areas are for exercise and recreational activity.

  6. Alcohol: Is not allowed in the facility in an open or closed container. Possession of alcohol will result in the individual/s being asked to leave the building. Security and the police will be notified if the person/s refused to remove themselves and the alcohol.

  7. Promotions and Displays: The building supervisor or manager is responsible for all posters, flyers, signs etc. You must get approval of the Team Leader Customer Services before posting anything on any of the Recreation Centre Noticeboards.  Displays may only be posted on approved bulletin boards. They may not be attached to the building walls (interior and exterior), doors, windows, rails or any other painted surface. The Recreation Centre retains the right to limit the number, location, and duration of posting.

  8. Theft: Theft should be reported immediately to the centre staff at the front counter who will file an incident report with security. Patrons are responsible for any recreation centre equipment they may have checked out from the front desk. In the event of theft or loss of equipment, the ID card of the responsible party will be held until the items are located or replaced.

  9. Personal Property: The centre assumes no responsibility for personal items. All patrons are encouraged to secure their own possessions.

  10. Vandalism: The centre interprets vandalism as the willful or malicious destruction or defacement of University property. The centre has zero tolerance to any damage caused by vandalism.

  11. Sexual Discrimination: The recreation centre supports the University sexual discrimination policies and procedures.

  12. Membership: Users must have a valid Massey University or Recreation Centre pass to enter the centre.

  13. Members may NOT loan their ID card to another user for entry into the facilities managed by the Recreation Centre.  This action will result in the member card being confiscated and membership cancelled.

  14. Guests of members or current Massey University students must pay a casual entry fee. The casual entry fee is valid for the day that it is issued and it is not transferable.

Child Access

The Recreation Centre will not admit any child under the age of six (6) years of age unless the child is fully supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. There are significant hazards in Recreation Centre and it is the responsibility of the parent to ensure the child is kept safe and does not endanger or disturb other users.

Children six (6) to fifteen (15) years of age will only be allowed to enter the Recreation Centre under the supervision of a parent or guardian after the appropriate casual entry fee/recreation membership has been paid.

This applies to entry to the Sports Hall, Events Centre and Squash Courts.

Children under 15 years of age may not use the Fitness Centre or the Climbing Wall


The taking of photographs inside the Recreation Centre, including the use of cameras on Smart Phones is prohibited without the express permission of Recreation Centre Management. All subjects must be aware and give their permission to be photographed and approve the intended use of any photos.


Massey University Climbing Wall: Participants must be certified by the Massey Alpine Club to use the climbing wall. 

Dojo/Dance Studio: A moderate sized studio with a wooden floor is available for martial arts, aerobic, dance, fitness, and group activities. In order to ensure the quality of our dojo/dance studio flooring, we require a clean pair of non-marking shoes while using the dance studio. If the martial art mats are down then shoes must be removed. No street shoes are allowed. We reserve the right to deny access to anyone with inappropriate footwear.

Squash/Racquetball Courts: Three full-sized courts have glass back walls, allowing lots of light and viewing opportunities. We require non-marking athletic shoes while using the courts. No street shoes are allowed. We reserve the right to deny access to anyone with inappropriate footwear.
