Munich University of Applied Sciences - Hochschule München, Germany

Munich UAS.jpg Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) was founded in 1971. With more than 14,000 students, it is the largest university of its kind in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany. The university offers a limited number of classes in English, but Massey students with German language ability will be able to select from any of the courses offered.  Courses at MUAS have a strong focus on application-oriented instruction.

Munich, Germany’s third largest city with over 1 million people, lies on the elevated plains of upper Bavaria.  It is about 50 km north of the northern edge of the Alps, one of the great mountain range systems of Europe. Café culture is strong in Munich, especially during the summer. There are many restaurants accommodating all preferences of cuisine, and possibly the most important free time activity during the summer: the beer gardens.

Munich is an historic city with a range of cultural attractions.  It is also a leading economic centre, and many major companies, including Siemens and BMW, have their global headquarters in Munich.

Exchange students at MUAS can choose to have a German student buddy, who will help show new students around the campus and the city and settle into life at MUAS.

Courses

There is a small selection of courses taught in English each semester (see the link below) in subject areas including Technology, Engineering, Business, Tourism Management, Social Sciences and General Studies.

MUAS also offers small group projects facilitated in English for third-year students in Industrial Design, Photographic Design and Communication Design.  These projects change each semester.  For more information, contact a Student Mobility Coordinator.

German Language Lessons

MUAS offers free preparatory German language courses for exchange students prior to every winter semester.  The classes are for 20 hours per week over two weeks, starting in early September.  Students can earn 3 ECTS for successfully completing the course.  Places are limited and assigned on a first come/first serve basis.

Academic Calendar

Munich University of Applied Sciences works on a semester basis with two semesters in each academic year.

WS = Winter Semester (early October to mid-January, with exams ending mid-February) - correlates to Massey Semester Two
SS = Summer Semester (mid-March to early July, with exams ending late July) - correlates to Massey Semester One

ITEMS TO NOTE

MUAS does not own any residence halls or flats and cannot guarantee the availability of housing.  The majority of students studying in Munich rely on private accommodation.  The MUAS staff will help you search for housing.

All students are required to pay a mandatory student services fee of €129.40 per semester (subject to change) to support the administering bodies responsible for accommodation, refectories, and public transportation.

MUAS strongly recommends students from Non-EU countries take out a German public health insurance policy as this will meet the German legislative requirements.
