Sir Paul Callaghan was a world-renowned scientist and physicist, who believed that inspired entrepreneurs can change New Zealand as a country. The scholarship was established from the proceeds of the sale of Magritek business, founded by Professor Sir Paul Callaghan.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a domestic doctoral student. You will have admission into, or be studying within the first 12 months, of a PhD.

What you'll be studying

You will be enrolled in or intending to enrol in a PhD in the discipline of Physics or Chemistry and be researching a topic that has the potential to contribute to New Zealand's economy.

Eligibility criteria

You should be enrolled, or intending to enrol, full time at the Manawatu campus under the School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences.

Application checklist

Include the following with your application:

  • a copy of your transcripts for any tertiary level study completed outside of Massey University
  • a reference letter from your primary supervisor. This should speak to their familiarity with your previous research as well as other factors which may influence your success in the doctoral programme (e.g. consistency of past record, personal attributes, research preparedness)
  • your PhD proposal, including a statement demonstrating how your proposal has the potential to contribute to New Zealand’s economy
