Project Title: FRST - Post Doc - Dr Laurelina Meynier - Foraging and Feeding ecology of New Zealand fur seals (Artocephalus forsteri) in the South Island.

Trawl fisheries in New Zealand (NZ) raise environmental issues such as depletion of stocks, destruction of habitat, and high by-catch of marine species such as the iconic marine mammals. The hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) trawl fishery is the most valuable fishery in NZ with ~90,000 tonnes harvested per year (mostly for export). The main trawling areas in Cook Strait and along the west coast of the South Island are shared with an increasing population of NZ fur seals (FS, Arctocephalus forsteri), where by-catch in trawling nets is reported every year. In addition to by-catch, there is a continuous concern since the 1990s that the increase in abundance of FS negatively affects exploited fish stocks. Despite the growing number of northern colonies in the South Island, investigation of the FS diet in this region is so far limited to a 20-year old study at Westport and Kaikoura and a recent pilot study at Abel Tasman. However, dietary habits and foraging range are crucial information to assess the actual impact of NZ FS on commercial stocks. The current lack of data is helping to fuel controversy regarding the potential threat of this top predator on coastal species. I propose to investigate the foraging range and feeding behaviour of NZ FS at four breeding colonies in the north of the South Island, NZ, in order to quantify the potential trophic competition between NZ FS and fishing trawlers. This research will help government agencies to arrive at a clear position on the management of FS in NZ with regard to any interaction with the fishing community.
