Bachelor of Communication student Nikki Harris
When it came to choosing where to study, Nikki wanted a programme that would let her explore her options before committing to a major. She found that at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University, where the first year offered the chance to try marketing, journalism, expressive arts and more, before specialising.
Nikki says the mix of theory and practical learning made a big difference:
“I enjoyed the theory and practice structure of the degree. It meant I could learn concepts and then practically apply them in classes, which made the whole experience more valuable.”
Now majoring in Public Relations (PR) with a distance minor in Spanish, Nikki has embraced every opportunity to put theory into practice. One highlight was studying abroad in Bogotá, Colombia, as part of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America. There she studied at La Universidad de los Andes and got to learn all about their culture, while being immersed in the Spanish language. She also worked with a community group called The Bronx, learning how creativity and art helped them overcome hardship.
Beyond her overseas experience, Nikki also had the chance to work on a PR campaign for a local nonprofit, a project she says was exciting to see come to life and a valuable addition to her portfolio. On top of that, she was awarded a UG Excellence Scholarship earlier this year for her high academic performance.
Reflecting on her recognition, Nikki says it was a proud moment:
“Receiving the scholarship was such an amazing recognition of the work I’ve put into my studies over the past year and a half. It really motivated me to keep pushing myself.”
Balancing part-time work, distance courses and a busy social life hasn’t always been easy, but Nikki says developing better time management skills and maintaining a consistent schedule made all the difference. She also credits Massey lecturers for their support through personal challenges, from offering extensions, to checking in after classes.
Looking ahead, Nikki plans to spend a year teaching English in Spain while interning with a PR firm and later hopes to work in communications for a New Zealand embassy.
“There’s something for everyone in this degree. You’ll feel part of the Massey comms community and make connections that last well beyond graduation.”
