Food Technology and Veterinary Science rank among world’s top 50 in latest ShanghaiRanking

Friday 30 October 2026

Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University has two subjects ranked among the world’s top 50 in the latest ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, with Food Science and Technology and Veterinary Science both ranked 48th globally.

The ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects evaluates universities across 57 academic subjects, using measures of research performance grouped into five categories: world-class faculty, world-class research output, high-quality research, research impact and international collaboration.

Veterinary Science’s ranking has improved significantly, moving to 48th globally. A major factor behind the improvement was the subject’s World-Class Faculty score, which increased from 6.2 to 40.9. This measure includes the number of faculty members who hold senior editorial positions at major international academic journals.

The result reflects the international profile of Massey’s veterinary researchers and the breadth of research undertaken through Tāwharau Ora School of Veterinary Science.

The School’s research spans animal care and welfare, biosecurity, primary industries and public health, with research programmes covering areas including infectious disease, epidemiology, wildlife health, equine health and companion animal health.

Massey veterinary scientists also contribute to international research collaborations addressing infectious diseases and One Health challenges, including through the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory (mEpiLab), One Health Aotearoa and World Health Organization.

Food Science and Technology remains firmly among the world's top 50, ranked 48th globally. It is the third consecutive year that the subject has placed in the global top 50.

The result builds on a long record of international recognition for Massey’s food technology.

Massey’s Bachelor of Food Technology with Honours is the only degree in Australasia that combines food science, food engineering and food business.

Students have access to specialist facilities including the Food Experience and Sensory Testing (Feast) Laboratory and FoodPilot, supporting hands-on learning and research alongside industry.

In July, Massey signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India’s National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K), establishing a framework for expanded collaboration in teaching, research and innovation.

The partnership includes opportunities for collaborative research, joint applications for external funding, staff exchanges, student mobility, articulation and pathway programmes and postgraduate research internships.

The agreement builds on existing relationships between researchers at Massey’s School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences and colleagues at NIFTEM-K, creating further opportunities for international collaboration in food science and technology.

Head of School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences Professor Jamie Quinton is delighted that Massey has retained its place in the rankings.

“Being ranked 48th globally is a significant result for Massey University and a testament to the strength of our research, industry engagement and impact that our staff make both in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. Our work-ready graduates enter a thriving food sector that is desperate for their skills, and it is important to understand that our world class researchers are their teachers.

“This ranking is a recognition of Massey’s continuing commitment to food technology. Our research delivers safe, sustainable, nutritious food within a global food system for the future population in a world of increasing global food insecurity, imbalanced diets and climate change affecting our supply chains. My congratulations to the food technology team whose work inputs into this ranking each year.”

For the 2026 rankings, ShanghaiRanking assessed universities using research data covering publications from 2021 to 2025, with bibliometric data drawn from Web of Science and InCites.

Across its 57 subjects, the ranking presents around 20,000 subject units from approximately 2,000 universities across some 100 countries and regions.
