On Friday 22 August up to 10 students from Massey University’s Te Rewa o Puanga School of Music and Screen Arts will be joining artist and Head of School Professor Johnson Witehira Tamahaki, Ngāi Tū-te-auru to paint a large-scale mural in the heart of Cuba St, Wellington.

The live mural event is a unique opportunity for students to work and learn alongside an award winning mural artist in a busy public space. The space will also be brought to life with live music from students from Massey’s School of Commercial Music during the day.

Spectators will be able to watch as our artists bring together Māori and Pākehā figures in a dreamlike, imaginative space. Professor Witehira’s artwork will feature Māori and Pākehā artists and musicians playing taonga pūoro and contemporary instruments, symbolising the rich dialogue between tradition and innovation.

The live mural painting is being held during the Massey University 2025 Open Day as a special celebration of the innovation and hands on creativity that Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts is all about. Massey is running shuttle buses for Open Day visitors between the Cuba St location and its Wellington campus throughout the day.
