Vice-Chancellor visits universities in Guangzhou

Professor Jan Thomas has completed her first trip to China as Massey University's Vice-Chancellor, which saw her visit two universities in the city of Guangzhou last week.

Professor Jan Thomas has completed her first trip to China as Massey University’s Vice-Chancellor, which saw her visit two universities in the city of Guangzhou last week.

Professor Thomas met with officials from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, including President Professor Guangjun Sui, to discuss a proposed a joint teaching initiative, which would see Guangdong University of Foreign Studies deliver a suite of Foundation programmes, including Massey University’s academic English programme. Students who successfully complete the 12-week course that has been developed by the University’s Centre of Professional and Continuing Education would have the opportunity to pursue further study at Massey University.

The two institutions also took the opportunity to discuss the achievements of both universities and the aspiration to further collaborate around research and student activities.

Professor Thomas’ trip concluded with an event to launch the Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Massey University pathway programme, which sees students study at Zhongkai University for three years, followed by two years at Massey University to complete a Master of Science in Horticulture.

During their time at Massey, students are expected to first complete a Certificate in Science and Technology that includes an internship in the horticultural industry, before commencing their master’s studies.

Fourteen students are participating in the inaugural course, which commenced yesterday.
