The 2019 intake of students for Massey Business School’s Executive MBA will be heading to Whanganui to get a taste of the challenges faced by rural businesses.

Through a partnership with Whanganui and Partners, the district’s economic development agency, Massey’s Executive MBA students will spend three days in Whanganui at the start of their programme and continue to work with businesses there for the next two years.

The programme’s first course, Contemporary Strategy, will be delivered in Whanganui to fully immerse approximately 65 students in the region, with local businesses and iwi given opportunities to work collaboratively with them to tackle the challenges their organisations face.

A win-win partnership

Massey University director of executive qualifications, Dr Patricia Bossons, says she is excited to be embedding the next Massey Executive MBA into the business community of Whanganui.

“The executives on the programme will have challenging experiences that will let them put their learning into practice immediately, and we aim for Whanganui to benefit from access to high-level business practitioners, passionate about making a difference,” she says.

“This will be a true partnership between Massey and Whanganui, and we are looking forward to building lasting relationships within the community.”

Hannah Kelly, strategic lead for education and youth at Whanganui and Partners, says the initiative will be a significant opportunity for local businesses.

“This opportunity is outstanding for Whanganui and for our Whanganui businesses that will engage with the programme alongside the executives,” she says. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to host the Executive MBA here in 2019.”

The Massey Business School has been running its Master of Business Administration degree course since 1942, making it the longest running MBA in New Zealand. It is designed for executives from all over the country, not just those based in New Zealand’s major cities.
